The new “normal”

How do we even define “normal” anymore? I hope everyone reading this is safe and well in this scary time.

In some ways, the days aren’t much different for me than before. I still spend most of my day in my sewing room. Only, I have two extra days here. My husband is also off work, so now we have to think harder to know what day it is. We have been under a stay-at-home order since last Friday at 11:59pm. We hope and pray that this will help to slow down the coronavirus.

Today I did go to the grocery store to pick up a few things we needed, and to mail package to Island Batik with my Fall/Winter 2020 tablerunner. I had it done at least two weeks ago, just putzed around with mailing it. I had to submit the final fabric requirements today, and decided to ship the quilt right away. Yay! Two things to check off the calendar!!

One thing I have done differently is to do some of the things for ME that I’ve been putting off. I made a chenille rug with old t-shirts, I’ve been saving them for a long time to use for rugs. I wasn’t sure how that would turn out. It will do.

When I make the rugs, I use a layer of vinyl screen between the layers of fabric. That keeps the rug flat instead of bunching up every time someone walks over it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve sewn chenille rugs, but I did forget how the under-layers affect the look of the finished rug. It’s not the prettiest thing– but, it’s a rug, and it lays flat.

Many years ago my mom gave me an amaryllis for Mother’s Day. That poor thing has been through a lot. One day I found its pot laying out in the yard. The dog had carried it off and the bulb was there, on the ground, drying out. I replanted it and it kept on living. It’s bloomed very occasionally. I believe it’s like a poinsettia, that needs to be kept in complete darkness for x many hours a day to bloom. That’s something that it never got from me. But it bloomed!

Speaking of poinsettias…I had one the 2018/19 winter. After it was done blooming it just fizzled out. My daughter said it looked like I should throw it out. I told no, when the weather warmed up, I would put it outside with the rest of the houseplants (they like their summer home). It started growing again once it was outside. It made the move with the rest of the plants, came inside for the winter. I did nothing to encourage it to bloom. Then it did this.

Wish I could say the same for my Baby Tears, I lost all of them.

I have another rug in the washer, I’ll show you that when it’s dry!

Stay well!
