Another new quilter!
Sunday after church we picked up two granddaughters. I knew Elizabeth (9) wanted to make a tablerunner for their uncle’s upcoming wedding. I wasn’t sure what Anna (7) wanted to do. As it turned out, she wanted to make a quilt. Since the only thing she’s sewed before is a mini 10 Minute Tablerunner and a little drawstring bag almost 2 years ago I thought a “quilt” was a bit beyond her. I suggested she make a throw pillow, as Elizabeth did for her first quilt project. She used the same fabric that Elizabeth used for the tablerunner.
The fabric is from Timeless Treasures Peaceful Garden line. I had enough leftover from making Diamonds and Bowties.
They really worked hard on their projects. Of course, we had to take breaks. We made slime. We bought the ingredients last fall when they were here. I think we had stopped at Wal-Mart before meeting their mom. I took it home and put it away, and finally remembered it was there. We also had to play some games. They have two favorites, Carbels and the grandpa game. I have no idea what the grandpa game really is. It was a game that my parents learned from someone. My dad made a wooden tray to hold the cards and it became “the grandpa game”.
They were going to sleepover on Sunday night and go home on Monday. Monday Anna asked if they could sleepover Monday night too. I said sure. They asked mom, and she said yes also. If they had gone home they wouldn’t have finished their projects.
Here is Elizabeth’s, the pattern is Seeing Squares:
She quilted it with the serpentine stitch. This was the first time she did binding, and I had to help quite a bit. At that point I realized I maybe should have added corner triangles and made it rectangular. I have trouble with those 45 degree corners!
Here is Anna’s throw pillow:
She did quite well for her first project, and was really proud of it.
I had found a headband tutorial recently. The headband is made from t-shirts. I have plenty of those, so each made a headband. No pictures of those.
Tuesday was their mom and dad’s 14th wedding anniversary. Elizabeth did a search for ideas of things to make for their parents’ anniversary. I cut 14 slips of paper for each of them, and they wrote something they loved about their parents on each slip. The slips went in jars, which were covered in a square of fabric, tied with a ribbon. I shold have taken pictures of those too!
Today I spent the WHOLE day working on a new pattern! Mike made supper (Tater Tot Hotdish and KFC coleslaw) and cleaned up the kitchen. It felt like I’d been at it for years and made hundreds of blocks. Actually, it was a few days, and 50 blocks. I love the look of HSTs in a quilt, but I get so tired of putzing with them. This is the block:
Believe it or not, I have pictures of steps along the way, and I’ll do a post with them. But not tonight, it’s getting toward bedtime.
Elizabeth’s tablerunner is my Seeing Squares. The frames around the center squares and the binding are Moda’s grunge, probably navy or peacoat.
