Whirlwind

The Whirlwind blocks are made of Y-blocks. I make them by drawing lines on both diagonals of a square, placing it right sides together with another square. Sew a quarter inch to the left of the line until you reach the center and the other diagonal line. Then sew on the right side of the diagonal to the end of the line. I have a mirror function on my machine, so I would mirror the stitch to sew on the right side of the line.

In the past I would cut the squares, but this time, not thinking, I drew a grid like I do for Half Square Triangles. So I thought I’d try it. And it did work, I hope I remember that next time I need to do Y-blocks.

I noticed when I pressed the blocks after cutting them apart that the stitches showed where I had mirrored the stitches, if I pressed too hard against the seam. I don’t like that. I’m thinking that I could sew to the second diagonal, turn and sew along that line to the edge. In that way, I would always be sewing on the left side of the line, no mirroring. I haven’t actually tried it yet, but I think it will work. I hope.

I need to work on another pattern, so this is it for now. More pictures later!
